Manitoba to permanently reduce gas tax

Manitobans can expect to see a permanent change at the gas pump starting next week.

In his year-end interview with CTV’s Maralee Caruso, Premier Wab Kinew confirmed that his government would make a permanent 10 per cent reduction in the gas tax.

“Manitobans have told us loud and clear that this has made a difference,” Kinew said.

The permanent reduction takes effect January 1, 2025, exactly one year after the province launched its first gas tax holiday, which provided a 14-cent tax break.

“If it were up to me, the vacation would last forever,” Kinew said. “But to me, a permanent 10 percent reduction in the provincial fuel tax means we have lower prices than most of Western Canada, and we’re still doing something tangible, something concrete, to help you during this period of high living costs.

Kinew also stressed that Manitoba doesn’t “need this carbon tax here.”

“Give Manitobans a break,” he said. “We saw what a difference it makes to your budget at the provincial level to get rid of the fuel tax. Imagine what would happen if this carbon tax was removed to help you and your family.
