A child raises funds to fight cancer

A six-year-old Penticton girl has donated more than $8,000 to the cause of increasing cancer care at the local hospital.

Lyla Curran, with the help of her friends and family, started this summer with a lemonade stand fundraiser.

She then moved on to fundraising for handmade Christmas decorations. In total, Lyla was able to donate $8,000 to the South Okanagan Medical Foundation’s $10 million campaign to upgrade the oncology unit at Penticton Regional Hospital.

$5,000 came from ornament sales and $3,000 came from her lemonade sales.

“Deeply moved by how cancer has affected those close to her, Lyla’s personal experience inspired her to make a difference,” reads a press release issued this week.
