Sniper kills Florida man who fired more than 200 bullets at condo units, says shooter

A Connecticut man firing more than 200 shots at homes and police at a Florida condominium complex was killed Thursday by a sheriff’s sniper, ending a five-hour standoff. No one else was injured, as Fox News reports.
Joseph DiFusco, 56, died after being shot by a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office sniper. The incident occurred at the Kingston Shores condominiums, near Ormond-by-the-Sea.
The confrontation began around 4 a.m. when deputies responded to DiFusco’s report of suicidal thoughts. He refused medical transport. Two hours later, deputies returned after DiFusco allegedly began shooting at nearby residences and officers.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, “We probably fired over 200 rounds. (We could) hear the bullets whistling overhead, and we were 100 yards back. »
Chitwood said deputies have already visited the complex three times. He said DiFusco, a “snowbird” — someone who migrates to warmer climates during the winter — could have used firearms imported from out of state and refused to negotiate. “He wasn’t going to negotiate. Every time we tried to negotiate, he would shoot us. (He) would turn off his phone. He was armed to the teeth,” Chitwood said.
DiFusco’s family contacted authorities before the incident, expressing fears for his safety. “They were so afraid of him they were sleeping in a car,” Chitwood said. He also mentioned that DiFusco allegedly stopped taking his medication and hadn’t slept in days.
Neighbors were evacuated during the standoff. Authorities confirmed DiFusco barricaded himself inside his rental home with at least three weapons. Photos from the scene show the exterior of the building peppered with bullet holes.
