Steve Gleason, Former NFL Player Battling ALS, Suffers Accident After Volleyball Camp

Steve Gleason, a former New Orleans Saints safety who is fighting ALS, had an accident getting out of his van, his wife, Michel Varisco Gleason, said in a post on social media.

The 47-year-old was on the mend after the incident.

“Steve was in an accident getting out of his van yesterday to speak at the Gleason Life Skills volleyball clinic,” his X account reads. “It was traumatic for him and for all of us who saw him mutilated on the asphalt Even if he is injured, it could have been much worse.

“Miraculously, he was spared more serious injury because he was wheelchair bound and thanks to the quick action of his care team, a passing doctor and his family.”

His wife joked that the former NFL player was preparing to fight Jake Paul.

“He’s home, resting and grateful for this crazy, wonderful life and everyone’s support and love.”

Gleason played seven seasons with the Saints from 2000 to 2006 and had 71 total tackles in 83 games.

He revealed in 2011 that he was fight against ALS. He received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2019 and the Arthur Ashe Courage Award earlier this year.

Gleason faced another incident earlier this year. He had to be transferred to the hospital because Hurricane Francine hit Louisiana.
