Brentford News: Opinion-Why was Christian Norgaard not pinned to a new contract?

With Brentford safely in mid-table and out of the two cutting competitions, it is not too early to start thinking about next season.

Bees are now an established premier club, which is a remarkable achievement given the budgets and sizes of the teams with which we are in competition.

The team is quite adjusted, but a problem that must be solved quickly is the status of Captain Christian Norgaard.

His contract is exhausted this summer, although the club has the opportunity to extend it for a year, and little has been said about what is happening.

Thomas Frank was asked about the situation before the Manchester City match last month and replied: “We are in dialogue with Christian. He is happy here and we are satisfied with him, so let’s see.”

After the 2-2 draw with the champions, in which Norgaard scored an equalizer of the last blow, Frank said: “We are still better when he plays.”

He is right – Brentford’s assessment without the dane is much poorer than when he plays in the side – so that lets us ask himself what is the delay to determine it to a new agreement.

Could it be his age? He will be 31 years old next month and bees have few players over 30 in their team. In addition, Norgaard is already our fourth older player.

Or could he, like Henrik Dalsgaard and Pontus Jansson in front of him, simply wanting to return to his native Denmark?

All that fans can do is speculate and hope that the club will suit a new contract with Norgaard. He has played an essential role in our progress since 2019, and it would be a massive loss if he started.
