Rugby -bush for Wallabies while Schmidt decides the release of October – Theprint – Reutersfeed

Sydney (Reuters) -Joe Schmidt will end his reign as a Wallabies coach in October after this year’s rugby championship, an Australian hope that the very estimated New Zealander would remain until the 2027 World Cup.

The former Irish coach took over last year in the wake of the Disastrous World Cup campaign in 2023 in Australia and obtained well -improved performance from the Wallabies, which prompted Rugby Australia to try to persuade him to extend his stay.

The 59 -year -old initial contract finished until the end of the British and Irish lions tour in Australia in early August and he only agreed to stay until the conclusion of the annual test of the southern hemisphere.

“Rugby Australia will now start a process to recruit the next Wallabies head coach,” Rugby Australia (RA) said in a statement on Thursday.

There is no obvious replacement for Schmidt with the former coach of Wallabies Michael Cheika, now at the English club Leicester Tigers, the only credible Australian candidate with a large test experience.

Schmidt, who is widely considered as one of the best coaches in the game, had signed a short-term agreement due to his desire to spend more time with his family in New Zealand and take care of his youngest son , which has severe epilepsy.

“Joe expressed us that he appreciated his work with the Wallabies while clearly showing his need to spend more time at home with his family,” said Peter Horne, RA performance director.

Schmidt helped integrate Ireland into the power of the test game before working as assistant with the All Blacks team who reached the 2023 World Cup final.

His team in Australia last season showed much more coherence than under Eddie Jones in 2023 and won a notable victory over England in Twickenham before directing Ireland in Dublin during their November tour.

“I really appreciate my time with Australian rugby,” Schmidt said in a statement.

“The British and Irish lions are our immediate goal but, with the rugby championship that follows so closely after the Lions series, I understand the need for continuity before two test games outside of South Africa.”

The Wallabies, World Champions in 1991 and 1999, have been a sharp decline in the last decade and many in Australia hoped that Schmidt would continue its reconstruction until the Nation was hosting the World Cup in 2027.

On Wednesday, to all blacks, Beauden Barrett told Sydney that Schmidt had already made major improvements in Australian rugby.

“As black, I hope he does not register,” the journalist told the journalist twice.

“But I know how good it will be for Wallabies, for Australian rugby, if he does it. He is a great man, a great coach.
