Labor ministers could use new laws to stop Elon Musk donating millions to Reform UK.

Nigel Farage said “the question of money was discussed” during his talks with billionaire Musk at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week.

But Labour’s Lucy Powell suggested proposed reforms to political donations could stop Mr Musk donating up to £78m.

Asked if the Government could stop the head of Tesla and We have no immediate plans to do it, but we are doing it. have a clear commitment to looking more broadly at our electoral regime in this country, from things like 16 votes, which we are committed to, but also to making sure that our electoral system has that integrity and is robust to Many of the new problems facing undermine our democracy and elections.

“But just to be clear, foreign donations to UK-based political parties are prohibited under current law, so this is something that already exists.”

Labour’s election manifesto pledged to tighten rules around donations to political parties.

Foreign donations are not permitted in UK policy, but contributions from a “UK registered company” may be accepted.

But Mr Musk’s biggest company, Tesla, is registered in the UK, which could pave the way for a huge donation.

Pressed on whether the government could take action during this parliamentary term, Ms Powell suggested the crackdown could feature in an electoral bill planned for the next parliamentary session, which begins in July.

She said: “We are determined to make changes to the way elections are conducted in this country.

“There will probably be a bill on elections in the next parliamentary session, but obviously we haven’t made those decisions yet because we are committed to things like 16-a-side votes, which are in our program.

“And our manifesto also said that we would look at other issues to make sure that our elections in this country are fair, robust, free from many of the problems that are undermining our democracy right now, like misinformation,”
