The proposal aims to prevent discrimination in housing

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Advocates and lawmakers are trying to ensure everyone can have a roof over their head.

The proposal for access to housing for immigrant families aims to ensure that no one is discriminated against when looking for accommodation.

Justice for migrants says undocumented and asylum-seeking families often face discrimination when seeking housing because of their immigration status.

The proposed bill would add citizenship and immigration status to the protected class under the Vermont Fair Housing Act.

It would also prohibit landlords from requiring a Social Security number to apply for or sign a rental agreement. Instead, they can accept any form of government-issued ID.

At 11 a.m. Friday, Migrant Justice, other advocates and lawmakers will gather at the Statehouse to present the proposal.
