Stanley recalls 2.6 million cups due to burn hazard after dozens of injuries

I recently wrote about I hate the Stanley Cup craze And now there’s a new reason to turn to this overpriced mug company: Some of its products spill scalding hot drinks on people, sometimes requiring medical attention.

On Thursday, the venerable Stanley issued a voluntary recall for some 2.6 million cups, warning users to “immediately stop” using them. The products affected are not Quencher cups of so much viral fame. Instead, these are two of its stainless steel travel mugs, the Stanley Switchback and the Trigger Action. Both of these products have a faulty lid that has a tendency to come off and spill coffee or hot cocoa (or whatever their user is drinking) on the user.

A warning issued Thursday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission note that Cup lid threads “may shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to come loose during use, posing a burn hazard.” The agency recommends that people with the cups immediately stop using them and contact Stanley. The company will send you a free replacement cover and will also cover shipping costs, notes the CPSC.

In a statement on his Facebook pageStanley said: “We are asking all customers in possession of either product to immediately stop using it and contact Stanley 1913 for a free replacement cover. At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and creating quality products designed for life.

People have been injured due to defective lids. How much? The consumer safety agency notes:

“Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the United States, of recalled travel mug lids that came loose during use, resulting in 38 burns worldwide, including two in the United States, and 11 consumers in the world requiring medical attention.”

Yeah. I mean, it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but that’s more doctor visits than I thought.

Gizmodo has contacted Stanley for more information.

In recent years, Stanley has become a viral sensation, with the company’s Quencher line, largely aimed at women, the subject of TikTok videos around the world. The frenzy around the brand may have reaches its peak earlier this year, shortly after a woman claimed her Quencher miraculously survived a car fire.
