Filing ITR: The Income Tax Department now allows you to file rectification requests online in case of incorrect processing of ITR.

Filing ITR: The Income Tax Department now allows you to file rectification requests online in case of incorrect processing of ITR.

The Income Tax Department has introduced a new feature on its e-filing portal that allows taxpayers to submit rectification applications online, even if their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) are currently under review by the Assessing Officer (AO). This improvement streamlines the error correction process and eliminates the need for manual submissions.

Taxpayers should be aware that errors may occur during the processing of their income tax return (ITR) by the IT department. These errors can usually be identified in documents such as the Annual Information Statement (AIS) or TDS certificates. To rectify these notable discrepancies, taxpayers are required to submit a rectification request either to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) or to the Assessing Officer (AO), depending on their RTI access rights.

Earlier, taxpayers faced difficulties while trying to rectify errors in their ITRs. If the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) had the necessary access rights, rectification requests could be submitted electronically. However, when access rights were transferred to the AO, taxpayers had to submit applications on paper.

How to file a request for rectification

Taxpayers now have the option to submit rectification applications online even if their income tax returns (ITRs) are under examination by the Assessing Officer (AO). This enhanced functionality simplifies the rectification process, eliminating the need for manual submissions which were frequently associated with delays and complications.

The updated system will allow taxpayers to file rectification requests online, regardless of who has access rights.

Please access the electronic income tax return (ITR) filing portal.

Who can benefit from the rectification service?

The new feature addresses various issues including discrepancies in reported income and tax records, missing or incorrect tax credits deducted at source (TDS), and exclusions of eligible deductions or exemptions.

In a recent development, the Income Tax Department has introduced an important update for eligible taxpayers seeking Section 87A tax reduction during the financial year 2023-24.

Since December 31, 2024, affected taxpayers have the possibility of filing revised or late income tax returns (ITR) to request reimbursement.

Qualified individuals can submit revised or late ITRs through the e-filing portal or the ITR filing utility. The ministry has confirmed that the updated utilities for ITR Forms 2 and 3, with the facility to claim refund under Section 87A, will be available soon.
