New York’s I-684 closed due to fatal small plane crash

A small plane crashed Thursday evening on Interstate 684 in Westchester County, New York, killing one of two people on board and leaving the other injured, authorities confirmed.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. in Harrison, about 25 miles northeast of Manhattan, halting traffic on the highway.

Video from the scene showed the wreckage of the white plane, believed to be a Tecnam P2008, wedged against a guardrail in the central reservation, as emergency vehicles blocked all lanes of traffic.

How did the I-684 crash happen?

According to ABC a 32-year-old Monsey man was killed and another person on board was in stable condition after their plane crashed after taking departing Linden, New Jersey just after 6 p.m.

The small plane would have headed north the Hudson River when it suddenly dropped altitude at a rate of approximately 1,000 feet per minute and made a sharp right turn toward White Plains.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the crash occurred an hour and 15 minutes after the plane took off. The pilot was attempting to land at a nearby airport after declaring an emergency, authorities said.

The names of those on board the plane have not been released.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said the Department of Environmental Conservation was dispatched to deal with aviation fuel spilled at the crash site.

What did authorities say about the I-684 crash?

In a statement released regarding Thursday evening’s plane crash, Hochul said, “I have been informed of a small plane crash near Exit 2 on I-684 in the town of Harrison, W. Westchester County.”

“State Police immediately responded with local emergency services and determined that there were two people on board, one person was confirmed deceased and the other is in serious condition,” he said. she declared.

Its statement continued: “The highway has been closed in both directions as the investigation continues. The accident also caused an aviation gas spill, which DEC is working to contain and clean up quickly.”

“My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I pray for a safe recovery of the injured person,” Hochul said.
