Assignment of teachers’ trainees to leave: loan scheme for students wrapped in government – Minister of Education Indices

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced his intention to transmit compensation for teachers’ trainees in an improved student loan program to allow students to respond to their own food and personal expenses.

The Minister explained that although the allowances were maintained in the meantime, the government intended to gradually consider the allowance system.

“There is no way to feed a student at the tertiary level.

We can restrict food to basic and free secondary schools, but at the tertiary level, students should be able to take care of themselves.

In the meantime, we will continue with food allowances, but we will go to an improved student loan system, “he said.

The Minister declared this when he met the management of the Conference of Directors of Education, Ghana (Princef) in Accra last Thursday.

The team was led by the president of the princeof, Professor Samuel Awinkene Antono.

The meeting provided the platform to directors of directors to express their challenges and explore strategies to improve learning results, improve the quality of education and improve their overall well-being.

Iddrisu said that the student loan program would work alongside the allowance system for a short period to give students the possibility of choosing, before the complete transition.

“The loan regime will be in parallel with the allowances initially, but we will possibly adopt standard practice in all tertiary establishments, where students count on loans instead of direct allowances,” he said.

Infrastructure, logistics deficit

The Minister also recognized the main infrastructure and logistical challenges faced by education colleges.

He said that if budgetary constraints existed, the government is committed to improving conditions.

“We must share resources at all levels of education, from nursery school to tertiary. But we recognize that education colleges are still in their emerging stadiums and require more support, “he said.

The Minister also expressed his gratitude to industrial peacekeeping directors, in particular with regard to concerns concerning the migration of teaching staff and parity of salaries at similar levels.

In addition, he recognized the gaps in the current migration process for teaching staff and ensured them the Ministry’s commitment to respond to unanswered concerns.

Blocked projects

Professor Antono has raised concerns about infrastructure projects at neutral in education colleges, declaring that many projects from Ghana Education Trust Fund (Getfund), some of which launched more than ten years ago, were always unfinished.

He underlined the urgent need for additional inn installations, science and ICT laboratories and general improvements in class to adapt to the growing student population.

He also urged the government to carry out an infrastructure audit and priority to the realization of abandoned projects before launching new ones.
