Magistrates launch indefinite strike in Cross River, close courts

The Magistrates Association of Nigeria, MAN, has called on its members to close all magistrate courts in Cross River State with effect from tomorrow, December 9, 2024.

The state association president, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo, announced that the magistrates are embarking on an indefinite strike in a notice issued on Sunday.

According to the notice, all judges in the state must ensure strict compliance with the order.

“All magistrates must strictly adhere to this Bulletin No. 2 by refraining from performing any official functions, including court hearings, effective Monday, December 9, 2024 and until further notice.”

This order follows an earlier communiqué issued on November 5, 2024, after a general meeting during which eight demands were made to the Cross River State Government.

“And this was also a continuation of our letter to the Governor of Cross River State dated November 11, 2024, in which the strike notice was extended to Friday, November 22, 2024 to enable the government to State of responding to our demands.

“Furthermore, in view of Bulletin No. 1 dated November 27, 2024 in which we had launched a warning strike from November 27 to November 29, 2024, the Cross River State Government has not responded to our demands contained in our press release of November 27, 2024. November 5, 2024, or even take steps to negotiate with us.

“We hereby embark on an indefinite strike until our demands are met.”
